Station Tech Apprentice II - Combo

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Station Tech Apprentice will work in a team environment to install, test, troubleshoot and repair substation and power plant control, communication and protection circuits and install substation and power plant foundations, structures, cables and equipment. Works on all phases of substation construction and assists in all types of substation work which includes:

  • Wiring control buildings, installing conduit, installing switchboards and rewiring switchboards.
  • Radio tests current transformers on power transformers and power circuit breakers. Installs substation and power plant AC and DC local service.
  • Troubleshoots control components, including relays, meters and associated equipment using prints and schematics.
  • Operates all types of heavy equipment (backhoe, man lift, bucket truck, boom truck, line bed, skid steer, caterpillar, track hoe, compactors, augers, trenchers)
  • Prepared station site, installs fencing and gates and forms and pours concrete foundations.
  • Installs steel structures, transformers, breakers, switches, regulators, and other associated electrical equipment.
  • Digs trenches for cables and duct vaults, excavates and installs power cable vaults, installs high voltage power cable and terminates power cable.

Performs all duties listed in accordance with the Company Safety Standards.

Job Requirements

Knowledge

OSHA regulations, MSDS, electrical safety related work practices; electrical circuits, electronics, algebra, and trigonometry; utility system practices and utility business practices; substation and power plant operations, maintenance, construction, and safety practices; safe operation of hand and power tools used in the electrical trades; AC and DC circuit theory, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and other drawings such as electrical, mechanical, and structural details; batteries, protection equipment, power transformers, load tap changers, and potential and current transformers; power circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect and air break switches, synchronous condensers, series and shunt capacitors, AC & DC controls; test equipment and testing methods, and troubleshooting techniques. Performance Management System, Corporate policies, START Program; PC use and basic software.

Skills

Interpersonal communication and good verbal and written communication; problem identification, problem solving, troubleshooting, and operating test equipment; basic use of personal computers using software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, databases, e-mail, and PASSPORT; organization and time management.

Abilities

Make effective decisions, set and achieve goals, commit to personal and professional growth; read and understand substation and power plant drawings; establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and others; work independently, be self-motivated and flexible; meet project deadlines; apply established guidelines, and use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Apprentices must be physically able to perform all essential job functions without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. Apprentices must also be at least 18 years of age

  • EducationHigh school diploma or GED. Completion of vocational/technical training in electronics or control systems wiring, military training in either of the aforementioned areas, or an equivalent

combination of training and experience, or an equivalent combination of appropriate education and experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • ExperienceTwo years documented, recent experience in an electrical, control wiring, or related field.
  • Licenses and CertificationsValid drivers license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position. Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the ability to occasionally bend, stoop squat, crouch, climb ladders, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and rarely crawl. Occasionally lift above-shoulder items weighing up to 50 lbs, and waist-high and knee-high items weighing up to 75 lbs; occasionally push or pull items using force of up to 50 lbs. and rarely up to 125 lbs; occasionally carry with one hand items weighing up to 50 lbs or two hands items weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally use fine and gross hand manipulation when working with tools or equipment, and occasionally use foot controls when driving. Job sometimes requires working outdoors in adverse weather conditions or in confined spaces. Applicant must perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment, post-offer Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION

Immediately enroll in the Stations Technician Apprenticeship Program. Complete required Company training (including safety) within 60 days, and as scheduled thereafter.
