Phlebotomist PRN

Job: Laboratory

The phlebotomist draws blood samples to be analyzed by laboratory personnel and interpreted by Pathologists such that patient diagnoses may be made. The tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Collects blood samples ensuring proper patient identification and labeling of samples.
  • Follows hospital policies and procedures for transporting/delivering samples to laboratory.
  • Maintains strict quality control for procedures.
  • May perform special tests such as clotting time, bleeding time and glucose tolerance tests and report test results.
  • Maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken.
  • Maintains needed equipment and supplies.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • This is a PRN position, scheduledto work as needed.  Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Completion of Phlebotomy Training program and/or nationally recognized certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.
  • One year experience preferred.
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
  • Ability to perform work that requires occasional stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, climbing, overhead lifting. Frequent standing , walking, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. Lifting up to 50 pounds.

    Under the direction of the Director of Staffing Coordination, the director of the assigned and/or the charge nurse of the assigned unit, provides nursing care to assigned patients. Performs related assessments, procedures and treatments, evaluations and updates of patient plan of care that assures and maintains high quality care for all assigned patients.1. Performs thorough assessments of the assigned patients on the assigned unit. Assessments include obtaining patient history, assessing body systems, outcomes of treatments and procedures performed and the psychosocial needs of the patient. Assessment of patient family needs during death and dying. Incorporates age-specific factors in provision of care. Performs age-specific nursing assessments, assesses age-specific safety issues (e.g., plans care with frequent breaks for elderly patients, implements appropriate skin care to maintain skin integrity) and appropriately interprets age-specific patient data and responses.2. Safely and effectively performs nursing procedures and treatments to ensure high patient and physician satisfaction. Maintains sterile and aseptic technique for assigned patients. Follows established nursing protocols. Administers medication following the 5 Rights and meets standards regarding errors. Demonstrates competence in all required competency assessment modules for assigned unit and for hospital-wide nursing competencies. Provide support and care for patient and family during the death and dying experience.3. Provides ongoing evaluation of all assessments, procedures and treatments. Updates plan of care based on the evaluation. Notifies and consults physician and mid-level practitioner on patient outcomes and status, using effective communication skills.
