JOB DESCRIPTION

Idaho Power Company is seeking to hire a Mechanical Engineer to provide engineering services to the Power Production department. Responsibilities include providing operation, maintenance, and construction engineering support to combustion turbine generation facilities, as well as performing construction management services for plant betterment projects. This person will work within a team environment, under limited supervision. Typical duties include:

  • Providing mechanical engineering design, analysis, and study functions for combustion and steam turbine, diesel generator, and hydroelectric equipment
  • Providing engineering support for EPA and DEQ licensing, permitting and compliance issues
  • Evaluating the mechanical performance of power generating equipment, including rotating machinery dynamics, bearing performance and ancillary equipment performance
  • Providing design and construction management services for various plant betterment and new construction projects
  • Researching new materials, equipment, methods and technologies for generation applications
  • Evaluating costs and benefits associated with combustion turbine facility operational alternatives
  • Developing solutions to operational and maintenance issues as the arise
  • Assisting in preparing and tracking budget activities

 Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Mechanical engineering principles of gas and steam turbines as well as internal-combustion engines
  • Electrical utility construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment
  • Prefer knowledge of:
  • Air permitting compliance
  • State air quality regulations
  • Gas-fired and steam turbine power plant operations and maintenance
  • Contracting procedures and construction practices
  • Piping system design & maintenance

Skills in:

  • Developing and organizing methods of solving problems
  • Performing technical research to solve problems
  • The application of computers in engineering work
  • Advanced mathematics including trigonometry, calculus, and vectors
  • Evaluating the cost effectiveness of projects, processes, and solutions

Ability to:

  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports
  • Break tasks into small components and ensure all details are included in the finished product
  • Work in teams and maintain effective working relationships with other departments
  • Read and develop detailed engineering drawings, diagrams, and specifications
  • Work independently
  • Perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Exercise good judgment and initiative in resolving problems

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering
  • Prefer bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, from a ABET accredited school

Experience:

  • Level I: 0 to 2 years engineering experience
  • Level II: 3 or more years related engineering experience
  • Preferred: Candidates with 3 or more years of mechanical engineering experience; Previous experience in design, maintenance, or plant engineering of combustion cycle power plants

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements of position.
  • Prefer FE, EIT or PE certification

Other Requirements:

Successful candidate will be required to:

  • Drive to combustion turbine generation facilities as needed, with occasional overnight stays. Position is based in Corporate Headquarters office in Boise with regular travel (within 1 hour) to our generation facilities
  • Occasionally work in proximity to hazardous areas, and therefore must have thorough familiarity and strict conformance with all state and federal safety rules as well as Idaho Powers safety procedures
  • Must have adequate agility and mobility to allow access to construction and maintenance sites such as climbing ladders and accessing confined spaces
