Job Description

1. Inspects locomotive before run to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and all FRA requirements.

2. Reads switching orders from designated persons (Crew).

3. Observes radio and hand signals in yard or in cab and operates locomotive in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.

4. Observes arm or lantern signal from Conductor and moves controls to move locomotive backwards or forwards to switch and couple cars; or receives starting signal from Conductor and moves control; such as throttle and air brakes to operate locomotive.

5. Reads and interprets wayside signals, track warrants and bulletins, and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety rules and regulations and time schedule.

6. Talks to Conductor or other yard workers via radio to give or receive switching information.

7. Confers with train dispatcher via radio to issue or receive information or instructions concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains.

8. May assist workers to throw switches (exerting up to 100 pounds of force) or perform other activities involved when performing switching operations.

9. Turns hand brake wheel or ratchet type brake, as needed, which requires exerting 75 to 100 pounds of force.

10. Observes track to detect obstructions.

11. Inspects locomotive after run to detect damaged or defective equipment.

12. Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.

13. May lubricate moving parts of locomotive.

14. Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general educational development (GED), and 6 months of trainmans experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Mechanical aptitude preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

This job requires 40 hours of initial classroom training; 80 hours of on-the-job training; Locomotive Engineer Certification; and 24 hours of training every 3 years to maintain certification. Ability to pass Monitored Skill and Proficiency Ride-along Test.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of and skill in operating diesel-electric locomotive.

2. Knowledge of and skill in using locomotive controls, such as throttle, air brakes, forward and reverse functions to switch and couple cars for loading, unloading, makeup and breakup of trains.

3. Knowledge of and skill in applying railroad rules, regulations and requirements, as well as safety rules and regulations in performing duties.

4. Knowledge of and skill in using radio and/or transmitting equipment to give or receive information.

5. Knowledge of and skills in using various hand tools, including measuring tapes, screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets.

6. Knowledge of and skills in performing various mechanical maintenance.

7. Ability to calculate weights, volumes, measures, distances, and surfaces; add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.

8. Ability to see, read, interprets, and follows track warrants, track bulletins, train signals, arm, or lantern signals.

9. Ability to acquire and maintain cfr part 240 certification. Ability to pass annual test/examination for engineers (cfr part 240 examination).

10. Ability to pass Monitored Skill and Proficiency Ride-along test.

11. Ability to maintain clean driving record for prior 36 months with no DUI or DWI for cfr part 240 certification.

12. Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, governmental regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos, and other work-related information.

13. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form and/or to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions and/or to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems.

14. Ability to talk to and effectively communicate with co-workers, yard personnel, conductors, switchmen, railroad officials and others in a concise, courteous, efficient, and professional manner..

15. Ability to make independent judgments, using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base.

16. Ability to think and act quickly in emergency and non-emergency situations.

17. Ability to perform shift work, including shifts up to 12 continuous hours in length, and to be on call at any hour.

18. Ability to train engineer trainees and others as needed.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must be able to see (with vision correctable to 20/40 and field of vision of 70 degrees per 49 cfr part 240 requirements); identify and distinguish colors; possess peripheral vision; and depth perception in order to operate locomotive, read railroad or yard traffic signals, hand signals, lantern signals, and observe track obstructions 100% of time.

Must be able to hear in range, per 49 cfr part 240, with loss of no more than 40 dB in the 500hz, 1000hz, and 2000hz without use of hearing aid 100% of time.

Must be able to bend, reach, lean, stoop, and twist 30% of time.

Must be able to stand and walk, on both level and uneven ground, to reach locomotive or facilities; stand, balance and walk along side (catwalk) of locomotive; stand and walk, on both level and uneven ground, to and from switching equipment 20% of time.

Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb or descend steps (with first step being a minimum of 12 inches from ground) and hold onto rails to enter the cab of locomotive, on both level and uneven surfaces10% of time.

Must be able to sit and use hands/arms to grasp, push, pull and/or turn locomotive controls, hand brake wheel or ratchet type brake, bell and horn 70% of time.

Physical Dimensions:

The employee is required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and or up to 10 to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects, turn/push/pull controls, push or pull weight up ladders or steps, and pull or push rail switches.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to a high noise level; vibration; high, precarious places; weather conditions; heat from equipment; sitting in semi-confined space for long periods of time; exposure to fumes from oil, grease and fuel.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Employees in this job do not have supervisory responsibilities. However, employees in this job are responsible for providing training to engineer trainees and others as needed.
