Job Description

Saint Alphonsus Health System is seeking an Energetic, Self-Driven, Collaborative, Entreprenuerial Director of Communications and Public Relations



Duties and Responsibilities

Saint Alphonsus Health System (SAHS) Director of Communications and Public Relations directs and manages internal, external communications and public relations activities for the health system and affiliated entities.  Key stakeholders include senior leadership, managers, associates, physicians, volunteers and donors.  Director is responsible for leading and managing the system’s strategic messaging, corporate communications to foster internal and external stakeholder trust, goodwill in alignment with SAHS’s mission, values and strategic direction. 
Key focus areas include:
(1) Strategic Messaging;
(2) Organizational Communications;
(3) Communications Infrastructure (traditional and electronic media);
(4) Public Relations. 

 

Externally, the leader will manage strategic outreach to the media, third-party organizations, employers, healthcare professionals and consumers.  In addition to providing communications content support, this position will be responsible for leading project teams, develop strategic communication plans for service lines and top strategic initiatives and ensure an integrated strategic communications approach within the marketing, communications and public relations department. Leader ensures that digital and social media is integrated into all strategic communication efforts.  Position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Community Development.  May be required to travel within Idaho and Oregon with occasional overnight and/or weekend commitments. 

Job Requirements

Qualifications
 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications, advocacy and government relations, public relations, or related field.  Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience focused in communications, advocacy and/or government relations.General knowledge of media, consumer, public relations and government relations preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple communication platforms, including publications, meetings, intranets, special events, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership launching special events, campaigns, grass roots efforts or advocacy related efforts on behalf of health system, nonprofit organization, public sector organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capability.
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and systemically.
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently. Works well under pressure, tight timeframes and ambiguous external environment (e.g., evolution of health reform).
  • Demonstrated maturity in decision-making.
  • Excellent organizational and staff development skills.
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills with an ability to translate complex issues into consumer-friendly language.
  • Demonstrated experience developing public relations plans to budget.
  • Experience working with electronic media as well as traditional broadcast and print media. Relationship builder with the flexibility, political savvy to "manage by influence". Strong advocate of electronic media, social media (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Pinterest, etc) tools and tactics.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including colleagues, board members, physicians, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other key stakeholders.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and mentoring employees.Demonstrated experience managing copy writers, editors and other contracted or resource personnel.
  • Must possess a valid Idaho or Oregon driver’s license.
  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends depending on media/PR/Communication needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree preferred

Shift:

Full-time, Exempt position, may require evenings and/or weekends depending upon media/PR/Communication needs.
