JOB DESCRIPTION

Idaho Power Company is seeking a Generation Specialist Operator to perform necessary daily operating and maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the Langley Gulch combined cycle power plant, area, and facilities. The successful candidate will ensure necessary generation by performing manual switching and operation in the event of an emergency (i.e., failure of automated generation dispatch systems).

In addition, performs core responsibilities related to the operation of the plant, and coordinates plant operation with Generation Dispatchers. This includes operating electrical equipment, gas turbines, steam turbines, water treatment equipment, generators, governors, exciters, voltage regulators, transformers, motor generators, cranes and hoists, power circuit breakers, turbines, pumps, air compressors, building and vehicle wiring, and other auxiliary equipment, including river pumping station, water treatment equipment, HRSG (boiler), SCR (catalyst control). He/she will perform security inspections of the facilities and leads public tours, as well as ensure calibration and operation of CEMs equipment to maintain compliance of the plant air permit.

Job Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Basic electricity and the function, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of power plant equipment
  • Basic chemistry fundamentals

Skills in:

  • Operation and maintenance of power plants
  • Basic computer use
  • Basic electrical
  • Personal communication, interactive teamwork, and conflict resolution
  • Prefer skills in basic welding and fabrication, as well as mechanical and electrical troubleshooting
  • Wiring and schematic diagrams

Ability to:

  • Maintain high productivity with minimal supervision
  • Perform manual labor when necessary in adverse conditions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Establish positive working relationships in a team-based environment

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience:

  • 4 years experience in power plant operations with 2 years in a steam plant operation OR certificate of completion of a Generation Specialist training program that is recognized by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT) and includes at least 4 years of relevant work experience in power plant operations and maintenance.
  • Prefer 2+ years operations experience in a combined-cycle power plant

Licenses:

  • Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job will require occasional, physically strenuous work for long periods of time and in adverse conditions. Job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, climb into and out of vehicles, twist, kneel, balance, reach, and climb multiple flights of stairs (up to 110 feet at Langley Gulch). Ability to work at/on heights. Occasionally lift items shoulder height and above weighing up to 25lbs, rarely 50lbs. Occasionally lift and carry up to 75lbs chest high, waist high, and knee high. Occasionally using exertional force to push/pull items weighing up to 50lbs. Occasionally carrying items with two hands or one hand weighing up to 75lbs. Requires the ability to operate foot pedals while driving a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and testing equipment and use fine motor skills to use a computer keyboard, test equipment, and replace parts. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. Applicant will need to be able to qualify to wear a respirator and SCBA. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment, post-offer Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Respond to emergencies outside of and/or in excess of normal working hours in an appropriate time frame
  • Occasional travel with overnight stays
  • Must obtain and wear approved safety footwear and FR rated clothing
  • Company housing is not available.
