WATER MAINTENANCE WORKER 1
JOB DESCRIPTION
The City of Kuna, Idaho is seeking candidates for its Water Maintenance Worker position. The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform installation, maintenance and repair duties of the supply, transmission, and distribution systems for City potable water, pressurized irrigation, and gravity irrigation systems. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Lead Water Maintenance Worker and general supervision of the Water Superintendent. The principal duties of this class are performed outdoors and may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools, working in tight quarters, and the use of heavy equipment.

Job Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may vary by assignment):
- Performs installation and repair of water service connections, water lines, well houses, pump stations, fire hydrants, meters and related water system production, transmission, storage, and distribution systems;
- Performs installation and repair of irrigation service connections, irrigation lines, irrigation pump stations, reservoirs, meters and related irrigation system production, transmission, storage, and distribution systems;
- Monitors and repairs pump stations, leaks, breaks, floods, flow meters, etc.
- Performs installation, maintains, and monitors operation of pumps, generators, and related equipment;
- Collects and tests water samples;
- Reads water meters and enters information into data collector;
- Installs, services and repairs water connection meters;
- Turns on and turns off water and irrigation service to individual connections, as directed;
- Locates, flags, and records water main, valve, and lateral locations for contractors and general maintenance and repair;
- Responds to customer complaints regarding consumption and provides field explanations of meter readings and billing procedures;
- Participates in work zone safety procedures including traffic flagging, setting up warning signs as required by state and federal regulations;
- Monitors and maintains water pumps and records data;
- Maintains well houses, booster stations and grounds;
- Operates a variety of hand tools and power equipment including but not limited to jack hammers, electrical testing equipment, metal detector, welder, and related equipment;
- Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to backhoe, trenching equipment, and dump trucks;
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Responds on-call after duty hours in emergency situations for sewer, water and irrigation facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:
- Methods, equipment, materials, tools, and standard practices for the operation, maintenance, and repair of a water production, storage, and distribution system;
- Federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices.
- Water sampling and testing procedures and standards;
- Equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices;
- Mechanical apparatus, electrical, pump, and pipe fitting methods and techniques;
- Operation of standard office equipment, including a personal computer and job-related software.
Ability to:
- Follow written and oral instructions;
- Learn and apply federal, state, City and other applicable water treatment standards;
- Learn and apply federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices and handling and disposal of hazardous materials;
- Perform simple mathematical calculations required for system operation;
- Read and interpret system technical and operational manuals and guidelines;
- Read and interpret meters, gauges, control panels, and testing and monitoring equipment;
- Operate manual and automated valve, pump, and control systems;
- Operate a motor vehicle;
- Operate heavy equipment, power equipment, hand tools, and specialized water distribution equipment;
- Operate standard office equipment, including a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
- Learn and interpret test results, make visual inspections and adjust processes accordingly;
- Prepare written reports and maintain system performance records;
- Communicate effectively and establish and maintain working relationships with other City employees, supervisors, and the public.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- High school diploma or GED equivalency is required; and
- One to two (1-2) years water treatment or related experience is preferred; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Prior experience in a potable water and/or irrigation system environment is preferred.
- Idaho drivers’ license is required;
- Must obtain Water Operator I certification within one year of hire.
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public, and discern warning or emergency alarms, including vehicle backup warnings;
- Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and work orders, technical and operational documents, and discern dials and gauges;
- Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate valves and control mechanisms; operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer; operate laboratory testing and monitoring equipment; operate a motor vehicle; and operate a variety of power and hand tools and to make adjustments to equipment;
- Sufficient strength to lift objects up to 75 pounds;
- Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, and balance to perform operation and maintenance tasks which require working in enclosed and confined spaces and work in a water production, transmission and/or treatment facility environment.
- Jobs in this class require performing repetitive hand movement in gripping, fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, walking, standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, crouching, climbing a ladder, pushing, grasping, and reaching.
