Allen Jr. was mistakenly omitted.Mayoral candidates from Hobart, Hammond, Gary and Crown Point will have a chance to make their election pitches on local TV. Tuesday nights at 8, beginning next week, Channel 56, WYIN, will have a program called "Northwest Indiana Mayoral Debates." In the hourlong program, candidates will talk and respond to questions by news anchor Jacqueline Swike.
Discussions will cover community topics, including economic development, jobs, transportation, the environment and revitalization. The program will end each week with closing statements from the candidates.
The first debate will feature the Hobart mayoral-primary candidates, Democrats Robert Crossk and Margaret Kuchta and Republicans Thomas Hallett, Pete Harrigan, Terry Joy Sr. and Robert Malizzo.
The April 9 program will have Hammond mayoral-primary candidates, Democrats Lon Malik, Edward Repay, John Smriga Sr. and Isaac Villalpando Jr. April 16 will have Gary Democratic-primary candidates: incumbent Thomas V. Barnes, former Mayor Richard G. Hatcher and Scott King.
Guests April 23 will be the Crown Point mayoral candidates.
HISTORY SESSION FOR CHILDREN
Children will travel back in time to three pre-historic periods at WellSource at Southlake Mall Saturday to find the last dinosaur.
Children will learn the basics of the scientific method and form their own theories of which dinosaur is believed to be the last survivor.
There will be two sessions: children in grades one through four will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon; those ages four to six will have their session from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
There is a $3 charge for the program and registration is required by calling 932-9355 or 736-2922.
WORKSHOP ON LAKE PROJECT
The Hobart Industrial Economic Development Corp. will conduct a workshop April 9 and 10 to allow public comment on plans for the second phase of a development project along Lake George.
Residents can visit the Hobart Community Center between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. April 9 and between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. April 10 to meet with representatives of Bonar and Associates, an architectural firm that is to design development plans.
Second phase work covers an area between the covered bridge and Third Street. It could include such things as benches, fishing piers, paddleboats, restrooms and lighting. The two-day workshop provides residents a chance to give their ideas on what should be included in the plans.
ADOPTING FROM ROMANIA
Sunny Ridge Family Center, local not-for-profit social service agency serving the Illiana area, will present a free informational meeting April 23 on the subject "How to adopt a Romanian child."
Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sunny Ridge offices, 9105A Indianapolis Blvd., Suite 301, Highland.
The meeting is to provide families with information they need to begin the process of adopting a child from Romania.
Marcia Sikkema, district office supervisor, and Bob McNeill, Intercountry Adoption specialist, will host the meeting.
Reservations are requested and can be made by the calling Theda Miller, adoption secretary, at 838-6611.
ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM PLANNED
Brothers" Keeper will hold its fifth anniversary program at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Barbara Lee-Wesson Center, formerly Gary Neighborhood Service Center, 300 W. 21st Ave., Gary.
Mildred Harris of Chicago, founder and overseer of Gary Educators for Christ and founder and president of God First Ministries, will be the special guest speaker. Music will be provided by the Holy Chariot of Gary.
Brothers" Keeper is a not-for-profit shelter for homeless men. The organization at 2120 Broadway, Gary, is still seeking individual donations of $5 and $100 from churches, businesses and other organizations for its fifth anniversary and national Homeless Month Drives.
The program is free and door prizes and refreshment will be provided.
INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER CLASS
An "Introduction to Disk Operating System (DOS)" non-credit course will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 5 at Purdue University Calumet, Hammond. It will be repeated from 8:30 a.m. to noon Mondays, April 8 and 15.
No previous microcomputer experience is required. Registration and other information may be obtained by contacting Purdue Calumet"s Institute for Continuing Education at 989-2506.
DISCOUNT MOVIE TICKETS
The Lowell Parks and Recreation Department has General Cinema theater discount tickets available weekdays. The $4 tickets may be purchased from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Town Hall, 512 E. Commercial Ave., Lowell.
