The Prescription Eyeglass Maker manufactures and assembles eyeglasses in the VISN 20 Eyeglass
Laboratory under the minimal supervision of the Lead Prescription Eyeglass Maker, demonstrating the ability to perform the complicated duties involved in the optical fabrication manufacturing process, while consistently meeting goals that ultimately meet the needs of our veteran customers. The Prescription Eyeglass Maker performs, but is not limited to the following duties:
· Manufactures ophthalmic prescription eyeglasses without assistance.
· Provides Quality Control on assembled prescription eyeglasses.
· Demonstrates proper work methods from onset of getting the blank lens to the final finished lens.
· Assists in teaching lower level positions proper work techniques and knowledge of optics.
· Assists the Lead Technician in developing processes & procedures for the efficient operation of the optical laboratory fabrication equipment.
· Assures that maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with all related policies.
· Assures compliance with regulations and operating standards per equipment manufacturer recommendations.
WORK SCHEDULE: Various shifts, but core Medical Center hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Duties normally require moderate physical exertion, including occasionally lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work includes periods of standing for long periods on concrete floors, stooping, crouching, bending, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, and walking. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent is standing or walking most of the time. The position requires manual dexterity. Incumbent must have the ability to maintain a high degree of mental alertness and concentration for up to twelve hours at a time.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed inside in a clean and air conditioned office setting and in a semi- clean manufacturing area. The incumbent is subject to lens dust, lens polish, equipment waste water, chemicals used in the production of ophthalmic glasses and the noise of the fabrication machinery. The office setting involves the everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting rooms, using safe working practices with office equipment, avoiding trips or falls, observing fire regulations, etc. The manufacturing setting requires particular attention to safety and emergency procedures in the case of injury or exposure to personnel. This includes assuring that staff are educated and trained in proper operation of machinery and what to do in the event of an injury or emergency. This setting also requires the same basic safety elements found in the office setting as listed above.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
